High Fashion Without The High Price
Powell – Have you ever wanted to own a designer purse, but felt that you couldn’t justify spending hundreds of dollars on a handbag?  Well, now you can do just that with the good feelings of generosity and without the guilt.  Goodwill Industries serving Marion, Delaware, Union, Crawford, and Morrow counties will be having their second “designer” purse auction on Saturday March 1st in the Powell Municipal Building located at 47 Hall St. in Powell, Ohio.

The doors will open at 9:30 a.m. so that bidders can register and preview the purses up for bids.  There are over 100 purses on the auction block, which resemble designers such as:  Burberry, Coach, Dooney & Bourke, Franco Sardo, Gucci, Guess, Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton, and Vera Bradley.  Ordinarily, Goodwill’s on-line auction site, shopgoodwill.com, would handle items of such high quality.  However, goods sold on-line must be authenticated, and that simply cannot be done.  In order to verify authenticity Goodwill would have to work directly with each designer and they sincerely do not have time to work with a secondhand store.  The energetic and comical auctioneer will start bids at $10.00.  Refreshments will also be provided.  The first purse auction was held on October 27th, 2007 and was a huge success.

There were 46 registered bidders and over 100 people in attendance.  They sold about 70 purses with an average sale price of $40.00.  Proceeds of around $3,000.00 were earned to support the Goodwill mission to assist individuals with disabilities and other barriers to attain self-sufficiency through employment and training, thus enabling them to reach their maximum potential in the community.

Delaware Wheel-A-Thon educates community on disability awareness

The 3rd Annual Delaware Wheel-a-Thon was held Saturday August 25, 2007 at the Goodwill lot in the Delaware Square Shopping Center.  The Wheel-a-Thon is an event that was designed to raise awareness in the community about the everyday challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.  The highlight of the event was the team wheelchair races.  The races are an education for the participants about how difficult it can be to maneuver a wheelchair.  According to team member Kim Jerew, “It’s definitely harder than it looks.”

In addition to educating the community, Wheels for the World ministry was on hand to provide an opportunity for residents to donate not-in-use wheelchairs.  They estimate that there are1.4 million wheelchair users in the United States alone.  Wheelchair Round-Up, a program that provides free repairs to wheelchairs, was also in attendance.  This program is headed up by Dale Claes, a Marion area physical therapist.

The festivities also included an auction and a 50/50 raffle with some fantastic prizes that included:  An Ohio State Quilt from Stitch & Fix of Marion;  Free Admission to the Columbus Zoo; Two free meals from Cracker Barrel;  A massage from CJ’s Hair & Body Studio;  One month free membership from World Gym;  Oil and filter change from Gerhart Auto Service Center;  and A $25 gift certificate from Roadhouse, just to name a few.

Disability Awareness Event a Huge Success
This year's Marion Wheel-A-Thon, on May 19 at Tri-Rivers Career Center was again a success. We topped our fund-raising revenue with the wonderful donations we received from individuals and businesses. Among those donations were a one-week time share to a U.S. resort, a Cabrio washer and dryer set donated by Whirlpool, and Ohio State Quilt donated by Stitch-n-Fix, a 14k emerald and diamond ring donated by Carroll's Jewelers, free golf passes from Whetstone Golf, and a framed football picture from OSUM plus many, many other smaller items.
